Social Work Experience
I have gained social work experience while being in the W.O.W program. I volunteer at the Salvation Army sometimes and I assisted an elder due to participating in a class assignment. The program that I help assist that is through the Salvation Army is called the “Bed and Bread Club”. This truck serves the metro Detroit area everyday through the week to oppressed people. The Bread and Bed truck serves thousands of residents 365 days a year with food and other provision items. The Salvation Army makes different stops in the area of metro Detroit that needs it the most. The truck provides food and sometimes clothing to people who are hungry and homeless. Every day the program serves a sandwich, fruit, juice, and a snack. In the cold months soup and hot chocolate are served. The Bread and Bed truck has been serving metro Detroit for 25 years.
Before the W.O.W Program the only social work experience I had was from working as a residential advisor for Wayne State University TRiO Upward Bound Program. This prestigious program is a tutorial and counseling program for eligible high school students in Detroit and Inkster Public School Systems. The eligible students have low-income, both parents has not graduated from a four year college, and has academic needs. The program offers academic and social development to participants through tutorial assistance, counseling, and college preparation assistance during a seven-week summer dormitory residence on Wayne State University Campus. I was a leader and supporter for my students and I enjoyed every moment with helping my students with their experience at college. I motivated my students to strive for excellence and to keep an ambition to succeed in high school and college, just like a social worker.
